Why Background Check Reports Are So Important In Deciding Who To Employ
Background check reports are becoming increasingly important in the fight against crime, especially in the fight against crime involving children. As a response to the many scandals which have arisen in recent years, the government has taken the step of introducing strict new laws requiring a background check to be carried out on any potential employee who will be working with children.
These laws also apply to part time workers, and to people involved in voluntary work. The need to protect the welfare of children has forced the government to make it a statutory requirement that these background checks are carried out. Special databases containing information on people convicted of offenses against children have been set up so that these checks can be carried out quickly and easily.
Anyone applying for a position where they will be working with children will know that they will have to pass this background check before they have any chance of being offered the position. This will obviously have the effect of deterring criminals from applying for these jobs in the first place. They will know that there is no possibility of getting round the system.
Of course, it is not only jobs where children are involved which need a criminal record check. Any job in the financial sector will also require individuals to prove that they are of a certain moral standard. Checks on people applying for jobs in this sector will obviously use a different database, but the actual check will be fundamentally similar.
The background check reports which will be generated by this search will reveal whether or not the applicant has any criminal record. This is the most vital part of any background check, but it is by no means all of it. Another vital part of the check involves databases which are privately held as part of the finance industry.
These databases store a person's credit history, which will be vitally important to anyone applying for a job where they are working with money. Any record of an account which has been defaulted and passed to an external collection agency will show up on this database. Records are held for a period of seven years, and then they drop of the file.
The exception to this is a record of bankruptcy, which will stay on a person's file for ten years. The seriousness of these types of records will depend on the job being applied for. There are many jobs where bankruptcy is a total barrier, although even in these cases the barrier is not for life, as the record will be gone from the credit file in ten years.
It is always advisable to tell people in advance that a background check will be carried out. If you do not tell people, and they then later find out, they may well resent the fact that you have carried out the check. Also, asking people to fill out a consent form means that you will get rid of most unsuitable applicants before they even apply. There will be no need to spend money on background check reports.
