How The FBI Background Database Allows Checks To Be Quickly Carried Out
Background information retained by the FBI allows crucial background checks to be carried out on potential employers, and people applying to do voluntary work. There are certain jobs in society, largely jobs which involve working with vulnerable people, for which the federal government has laid down a statutory requirement for a checking and vetting procedure designed to eliminate potential employees who could cause serious problems.
The FBI database is known as the National Crime Information Center database, and it stores records of crimes, including crimes against children, which can be accessed as part of the National Child Protection Act. This is the system laid down in Federal law, which must be followed in the case o anyone working with children. This is not limited to paid employment, it covers voluntary positions as well. Neither is it limited to ordinary school or nursery activities. It applies to anyone involved in running a scout group or even a sports coach who will be working with groups of young people.
The law in most states also insists that a similar background check is carried out on anyone who will be working with many other types of vulnerable people. The disabled and the elderly also rely to a large extent on their carers, and these carers need to be chosen with great thought given to their suitability for the job.
These FBI records are also used by government agencies looking to employ people themselves. The greater the position of trust or responsibility, the more important it is that checks are carried out properly. Many government positions involve a high level of responsibility, and it is absolutely imperative that any checks are carried out very thoroughly indeed.
Background police checks are now routine in many other places as well. A good example is at universities, where applications will need to be vetted with a criminal records check before the student will be accepted. The background form in this case is actually filled in by the applicant, and then forwarded to the police department in order for the check to be carried out.
Many other specialist careers have a special dispensation whereby employers can have a far more thorough check carried out than would normally be the case. Security personnel is a good case in point. Employers looking to recruit these have deeper access to relevant records than most employers.
Arrest records are normally confidential, but in certain extreme cases even these can be accessed by potential employers. The most obvious example of this is in the medical profession, where anyone who is going to be working with drugs, or just be around drugs, will be subjected to a check to see if they have ever been arrested on drug charges.
Any worker in the medical profession who will be working with vulnerable patients will also be checked against the register of arrests to see if they have ever been arrested in conjunction with any sex offences. The system is well designed to make sure that essential information is available, but that as much privacy is preserved as can be allowed. The background police checks use the FBI database which facilitates this.
