Why A Background Security Check Is A Necessary Precaution Against Employing The Wrong People
A background security check is a necessary procedure to be carried out whenever anyone applies for a job or any other position of responsibility. There are more of these background checks being carried out today than there has ever been before. This is partly due to scandals involving abduction or abuse of children, which could have been avoided had the correct checks being carried out.
Another reason for these background checks becoming ever more common is simply the advance in technology. It has never been easier to store data, or to access it, or to print reports from it. This has led to the expense of carrying out these checks reducing on an ongoing basis. Yet another factor is the increase in lawsuits being filed against companies who have failed to carry out the necessary background checks by people who've suffered as a direct consequence.
When you combine the risk of litigation with the reduced expense of carrying out a check, it is easy to see why an ever growing number of companies are taking it upon themselves to carry out background checks. Obviously, where children are involved, the matter is critical, and the security checks involved are a statutory requirement. The law is rightfully very strict, and demands full disclosure of any criminal history relating to children. There are special databases set up to facilitate this.
Although offenses against children are by far the most serious data which will be searched for, they are only one small part of the criminal checks which are carried out. A person's entire criminal record will need to be searched, including minor offenses such as driving violations. Although isolated incidents of these are hardly likely to act as serious barriers to employment, repeated incidents may well show a lack of responsibility and a lack of consideration for other people.
A background security check will often go beyond criminal records. By searching financial records which are stored on private databases, a picture can be formed of a person's sense of financial responsibility. Lawsuits, tax liens, and defaults stay on this record for seven years. A bankruptcy will stay on the record for ten years. There are many jobs for which a clean credit record is essential.
There are other jobs where a credit record is of no real importance, and a poor credit rating will not impair a person's ability to secure the position. Even in this case, carrying out a financial check is sensible, because it allows the employer to verify information given at the interview. This information relates to past employment and previous addresses.
Finding out whether a potential employee is lying about these issues is vitally important, as if they are lying, they almost certainly have something to cover up. If the entries given on the application form do not match what is on the credit record, a further investigation will need to take place. A credit report may be wrong, so take the time out to make sure. This can be a vital part of the background security check.
