Why A Comprehensive Background Check Is Necessary To Uncover Vital Information
A comprehensive background check is a necessary prerequisite for employment in many industries. The greater the risk involved in employing an unsuitable person, the more necessary these checks are. Positions which involve working with children have statutory requirements laid down in law which must be adhered to. Careers such as security guards also have special consideration when it comes to verifying a person's suitability.
Background checks are now carried out as a routine by so many employers, simply because it is now so cheap to do so. Modern technology has made it possible for massive amounts of data to be stored easily and cheaply, and for it to be accessed at great speed. Even where there is no specific need for a comprehensive background check to be carried out, it often is, simply because it is so cheap and easy.
Anyone applying for a job working with children will have to go through a comprehensive background check, which is laid down in law. Obviously, the most important part of this check will be in ascertaining whether or not the prospect has any criminal record for offenses relating to children. These will be stored on a separate database, and will be a total bar to that person ever working with children for the rest of their life.
Even if the person is cleared of any criminal offense against children, it is still necessary to check for other criminal offenses. People working with children need to be of the highest moral character, so any criminal record is likely to preclude someone from ever getting the job.
The comprehensive background check which needs to be carried out on people applying for jobs working with children will also include analysis of driving records. One or two isolated incidents may well not matter if the candidate is otherwise perfectly suited to the job, but a consistent history of motoring offenses is likely to mean that the applicant has a problem with behaving responsibly and taking responsibility for their own actions.
Another check which needs to be carried out is a check into the person's financial history. This is performed by checking a database stored privately, which contains a person's credit record. This credit record is used to generate a report known as a consumer report, which will contain important information such as any lawsuits which have been brought against the individual, and any outstanding tax liens.
Even if these tax liens have been fully paid off, they will remain on the credit file for seven years. Whether this has any direct bearing on an individual's ability to secure any given position will depend entirely on the nature of the position. Positions in the finance industry will demand a good credit rating.
Checking a person's credit rating is more important than you might at first think. As well as credit information, the report also covers past addresses and previous employment. Where a really comprehensive check is necessary, it will pay to thoroughly check out this previous information. If there is something here which does not match the information given on the application form, then the applicant may be covering something up. Finding out what is a vital part of a comprehensive background check.
