How An Employment History Background Check Is Necessary To Check An Applicant's Character
An employment history background check is a vital part of the recruitment process which many employers will go through before taking on staff. Depending on the position, it can be absolutely vital to ascertain someone's suitability for a certain task. In some extreme cases, the employer can face huge legal ramifications if certain checks are not properly carried out.
The most serious checks of all are carried out on anyone working in a job which involves contact with children. If your ambition is to be a school teacher, or to work with children at a nursery, you can expect to have to undergo a very thorough screening into your history.
The main part of this obviously relates to child sex offences, which are obviously a total bar on ever being able to obtain this type of work. These records stay on the database for your entire lifetime, so if anyone has transgressed in these areas there will be certain positions permanently closed off to them.
These may be the most important type of employees background check, but they are by no means the only one. In the information age, there are more people than ever whose job would put them in contact with sensitive information. This is never more serious than in the case of people applying to work for the Federal Government.
Access to Government records cannot be given to anyone unless they can pass through a very severe background check on employees. Obviously the Government itself maintains many of the databases which can be checked for evidence of moral character. Obviously criminal records are the most significant part of this, and do the most to reveal potential flaws in someone's character, but they are by no means the only records which are searched.
Driving records are also part of the Federal and State databases, and these can show a potential flaw in someone's attitude. Repeated offences which show up on a background check for employees can demonstrate a lack of consideration for other road users, which probably demonstrates a lack of consideration in other ways as well.
Private companies also need to carry out employer background checks. Many potential employees will have access to sensitive information which could cause a significant financial loss if it was to get into the hands of a competitor. The character checks carried out into the background of an employee are not limited to criminal databases, but will include credit checks based on data held on private records.
A background employment check can also include scrutiny of a potential employee's life outside work. Many employers now routinely screen some of the popular social networking sites, which can often give a good indication of the real character and personality of an individual, as they are being themselves on such a site. There is not the element of trying to impress the employer which is there at an interview, so it can be a valuable addition to the standard parts of an employment history background check.
