Why A Federal Employment Background Check Has Become So Important
A federal employment background check is carried out by the federal government on potential employees. This will vary to a degree on the nature of the job being applied for, but it will always involve a thorough search of relevant criminal databases, which are of course maintained by the federal government itself.
Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the number of background checks being carried out, as a direct response to the increase in incidents involving children which could have been prevented had the checks been in place at the time of employment. Added to this is the ease with which data can now be stored and accessed, and the expense of doing this which is falling all the time.
Checks for federal employment are obviously among the most important, and most stringent, of all background checks. Federal positions, at whatever level, will inevitably involve a degree of responsibility, and will often involve access to sensitive information which could be abused if it fell into the wrong hands.
The Federal Government, being in the position it is to offer some of the most competitive incentives in the employment market, can afford to be very choosy about who they employ. A check of the criminal records database is the first obvious step, as it will immediately reveal any serious problems, and eliminate the need for any further research for that applicant.
The federal databases do not stop at criminal records, of course. They also include driving records and court records which will need to be scrutinized. Because of the incredible high standard the Federal Government can afford to apply, even relatively minor problems can be a huge setback in gaining employment. Minor driving offences are unlikely to have any effect, but repeated offences of the same type will kill any chance of that prospect winning the job.
Even part of a federal employment background check will involve accessing the data on private databases. This data relates mainly to credit worthiness and how someone manages their finances. Such data is available in the form of a consumer report, and includes details of any lawsuits or liens brought against the applicant, even if those have been subsequently paid off.
These reports will stay on the file for seven years, excepting a full bankruptcy which will stay for ten years. Minor credit problems may not be a total bar to getting the job, although you have to bear in mind that federal jobs are highly sought after, and have a high degree of competition. Bankruptcy will be a bar to getting work with the Federal Government, but it is obviously not a lifetime ban.
There are some checks which are not available even for a federal check, unless the job is something well outside of the ordinary. These checks involve school, military and medical records, some of which will be held on the Government's own databases. If this information is not directly relevant to the job being applied for, it will still remain hidden to the agency running the federal employment background check.
